Great work to all of you who followed me into Macknuckle in the Canberra Cup last Sunday. $5 winners are gold any day of the week. I thought we were a bit hard done by with Bellagio Wynn. He copped the brunt of the interference and lost 10 lengths at the start. Have a look at the video and you’ll see him getting home hard, midfield and about 6 lengths behind the winner. Follow him.

I hope the loyal followers that were on my webinar yesterday cahsed in on Monton in Sydney. It is not often a bet of the day pays better that $8 but he is a genuine Group 1 horse and I have been saying that for some time. Tim Martin will probably take him to NZ now for a tilt at the summer Group 1 sprints.

The rain has been causing havoc of late and we lost the Brisbane meeting yesterday which is unfortunate as I thought it was a really competitive race meeting with some good bets to be had. It has also played havoc with the tracks. The Rosehill track is as bad as I have seen it. It is like quicksand if you are more than one horse off the rail. We can blame the small fields and the tempo of the races as much as we like but have a look at the tapes from the last few meetings there, they don’t lie. Why the other city tracks or provincial tracks like Newcastle and Kembla Grange aren’t used more I don’t know. Those two provincial tracks have excellent racing surfaces. Caulfield wasn’t much better and I should have known better myself. The rail was out 14m and when that is the case it is a punter’s grave yard.

My horses to follow from yesterdays racing are all going to provide us with some cash in the near future. Monton was easily the most impressive run of the day so keep backing him and keep winning. Impressive Jeuney was super in the Kingston Town Classic and she’ll be a force if she heads to the Perth Cup. Don’t give up on Tranquility either. She got caught back with no speed and she’ll win a big race this time in, mark my words. And finally Jeter in SA was very impressive. This filly just keeps winning and she carries weight too, a very important quality. Black type is not far away for her pedigree.

Any way for our Sunday special we will head down to Tasmania and load up on Too Many Reds in race 7 at Devonport. He won’t be a flash quote but he will win and win easy.

Well no sooner than the Melbourne spring carnival concludes does the summer carnival commence in the golden west. The Perth carnival is one of my favourites and as an owner I would love to win of the big races over there.

Last week we saw a masterful ride by Craig Williams on Gathering to snare the Group 1 Railway Stakes. This week we saw another great ride but this time by a local hoop in Willie Pike on board Hadabeclorka. Pike virtually stuck to the rail for one of the best inside runs you will see in a big race to secure the Winterbottom Stakes. Hadabeclorka started as much as $61 on some totes and incidently this horse was in my top 4 selections for the race. For the gold members on my Saturday webinar I suggested that you leave this galloper out at your own peril. On the same card I also supplied an all up with two horses that snared over $6 for the wise punters.

One of My tips for the big races in Perth, Mighty Rossa, finally got some clear running to show us what he can do. He was awfully unlucky not to make the Railway field and on that form he could have easily figured. He’ll go to the Kingston Town next week with a real chance.

I had a good day in Sydney yesterday snaring 5 winners overall. Two of those being top pick selections that paid better than $6 in Beijing Boy and Sikka. In fact a number of my Gold Members emailed me and said they backed Sikka when I first posted the ratings on Friday and said they secured $11. I said well done to them because so did I. I also bagged the Quaddie with a good dividend of over $450 on some operators. The reason I mention this is Sikka and Beijing boy are my horses to follow out of the meeting. Sikka has been gelded and this will keep his mind on the job and he’ll win a big race somewhere soon. Beijing Boy is only getting warmed up and I think the summer staying events are at his mercy.

We are off to Canberra for the time honoured Canberra Cup today. I have a couple of horses I am keeping my eye on there too. Macknuckle resumed superbly this prep and that always is a good indicator for his main targets and Bellagio Wynn although drawn wide can figure at big odds so have a bit on both.

Good luck and good punting.

Well, what a spring carnival we have just had and we have had everything you could imagine. The weather was all over the place, we had horses sold for millions, a bit of controversy and as always and we have unearthed some superstars.

On the superstars, how can we go past So You Think. He is quite possibly the most talented race horse I have ever seen but we will never see him emulate the deeds of the likes of Kingston Town. This is because he will most likely have one more preparation in the norther hemisphere before being retired to stud duties. We have unearthed two of the quickest sprinters I think I’ve ever seen in Hay List and Black Caviar. I still can’t wait to see them go head to head when both horses are fit as clearly Hay List was affected by the laceration on his leg, but at the moment it is 1-0 to the mare.

As for the future, for the younger horses, Masquerader and Retrieve are my 3yo’s to follow and Brazilian Pulse for the fillies. The best older horse to follow is without a doubt Maluckyday. I think this son of Zabeel will develop into the new WFA yardstick in the autumn and look out Cox Pate next year.

So where to next? Well a bumper summer carnival in the west just keeps getting stronger and stronger with plenty of eastern state raiders nominated for the big races. I will be looking for Mighty Rossa to take out the Railway, Waratah’s Secret to secure the very rich Winterbottom and the very good mare Impressive Jeuney to take out the Kingston Town on the way to the Perth Cup. So by my reckoning all the cash will stay in Perth with the locals.

We also have the strong Brisbane summer carnival with a very good sprint series that invariably throws up a pretty good horse or two and of course don’t forget the time honoured Villiers at Randwick in December, a race that I would love to win as an owner.

But our first hurdle is this weekend with the Sandown Classic meeting and the first running of the two mile Melbourne Cup consolation in the Sandown Cup. The question on everyones mind at the moment is, will Zipping run in and win his fourth straight Sandown Classic? Well, who would deny the grand old campaigner another victory? Certainly not me.

Well today is Oaks Day or Ladies Day but I have heard it also termed ‘Blokes Day’ for the number of well dressed females that usually attend the day. Today we are interested in the four legged females for the running of the time honoured VRC Oaks. This is the first real staying test for the 3 year old fillies so there can be some surprises in this event, however, in recent years, favourites have dominated this race. Class fillies such as Samantha Miss, Miss Finland, Serenade Rose and Special Harmony have started at very short quotes in the past few years and duly saluted. The form through the Wakeful Stakes run on Derby Day has been the most reliable form indicator year in and year out.

Today’s race will be run in very heavy conditions at Flemington as Victoria faces one of it’s wettest springs on record and that may have the capacity to throw up a surprise result. There are a few wet trackers and a couple of unknowns so we’ll have to wait and see. Brazilian Pulse is a deserved favourite after winning the Wakeful but Wakeful placegetter Heartsareforlove has come up at a very good price. Throw in the regally bred Precious Lorraine that is closely related to champion sire Redoute’s Choice and champion 2 year old Manhattan Rain, the fast finishing Sasa and the lightly raced Shezaten and we have a good race.

As with all the big days there are some cracking support races too. The Gucci Stakes has the bet of the day in Curtana and the last race on the card has and old marvel who is a master on wet tracks in Riceman. All in all it is a pretty good day and if we can repeat the effort we had on Cup day then we should win again. For those that missed our Cup Day efforts we managed to find two good quinellas on the card and tipped many a punter into the Cup trifecta…..You little beauty!!

So for the Oaks, 2 Brazilian Pulse to win. 4 Heartsareforlove, 5 Precious Lorraine, 6 Sasa and 13 Shezaten to fill the placings. Bet of the day: race 4 number 6 Curtana and each way special, race 9 number 1 Riceman. Good Luck!

Well what a day of racing we had on Saturday. The Caulfield track was very heavy but it was consistent which is all you can ask. I always look for the horses … Continue reading →

Well what a day of racing we had on Saturday. The Caulfield track was very heavy but it was consistent which is all you can ask. Some horses handle it and some simply don’t. I always look for the horses that don’t like it too wet but still run a big race.

Horses that I’ll be following out of that meeting include Zutara, Retrieve, Set For Fame, Demerit and Purple. Zutara, Purple and Demerit all didn’t handle the very heavy conditions but kept giving which is a sign of a good horse. Retrieve was at his strongest on the line and he is my number one pick for the Derby. Set For Fame resumed from a bleeding ban and toyed with her rivals. She’ll want to steer clear of the likes of Hay List and Black Caviar but she can compete with the likes of Hot Danish and Palacio De Cristal.

There is no missing Shocking’s Caulfield Cup run but don’t overlook Zavite either. He was all at sea on the track but got home from a mile back to run 7th. He’s a genuine two miler so look for him at Flemington. I like Metal Bender’s run too. He was about 6th in running all the way and didn’t go a yard in the heavy. He is a class horse and it will be interesting if Chris Waller goes to the Melbourne Cup with him.

In Sydney I liked a couple of runs too. The run of the day anywhere in the country was Thankgodyou’rehere. He missed the jump by about 2 lengths and won eased up. He has a good race in him but follow him through the grades as he’ll keep winning. Maluckyday was just as impressive. This is a genuine cups horse, but whether its this year or next we’ll have to wait and see what team Hawkes decides to do.

Before I go I can’t help but mention Whitefriars. Ive been talking about this horse for a few weeks now and I made him a good bet on the weekend. Well he came out and ran a track record. Who’d have though two little round things between his legs could have been holding him up that much.

The Caulfield Cup is always run during October and this year it is being held on the 16th October at Melbourne’s Caulfield race course. It’s one of the biggest events on the racing calendar and attracts an international class field of stayers.

One of the favourites for this years cup is Alcopop and frankly, my opinion is that he is a strong winning chance, but he will be doing it tough from the outside alley. On the opposite end of the scale, Metal Bender, has drawn the inside barrier (after the emergencies come out) and for mine he is the best chance in the race. Time and time again the best sectionals in the Turnbull Stakes stack up in the Caulfield Cup and Metal Bender ran the fastest last 400m in that race. That puts him at the top of my pics.

The path of breeding is swaying away from stayers in this country and it is clearly evident in a race like this. Only five of the 22 final acceptors were bred in Australia while 11 were bred in New Zealand. It is unusual because last time I checked this race was still worth $2.5 million. The internationals hold a good hand this year. Harris Tweed will stay all day and his form has been consistent for 18 months and the Japanese love to breed top line stayers.

My tips for the Cup are 1. Metal Bender, 2. Harris Tweed, 3. Tokai Trick, 4. Alcopop
