The Magic Millions ...
Unique To Queensland
Carnival and Thoroughbred Sales - 9th January 2009:
The Magic Millions carnival has been around for nearly 20 years now and it is one of the "must attend" big race days. The laid back attitude of the Gold Coast residents with the money and spending power of racing's high rollers makes for an enjoyable week or two.
The race meeting is unique, and there are similar models all over the world now, where only horses sold through the Magic Millions sales ring are eligible to race on the day. There is a race for everyone on the day including a maiden, stayer's race, country cup and open handicap but the big focus is on the $1,000,000 3 y.o. race and the $2,000,000 2 y.o. race.
Over the years it has thrown up some surprising results for the days racing and this is because of the big fields and the horses are coming from near and far so it can be very difficult to line up the form. It is not a day to go there with a big bank and hammer a couple of good things. There is just no such thing as a good thing on millions day.
I have been up here at the sales all week watching next years 2 y.o. runners get sold to their new owners. Some may be bargains some might prove quite expensive, but lets face it, if they can come back here next year and win the big one, it doesn't mater what you paid for it.
I'm neither buying nor selling this year but I still have an interest in the 2 y.o. race. Big Tony is by a sire named Antonius Pius and this is his first crop. I'll be up here selling a couple of them next year and one that is bred on the same cross as Big Tony. This is by inbreeding to the great Danzig in the 2nd and 4th generations (for the breeding buffs) and this incidentally is the same cross as Stradbroke Handicap winner La Montagna who was the first Group 1 winner anywhere in the world that was in bred to Danzig.
So I'll have my dollar each way on Big Tony at 50-1 and cheer him home all the way. On the form Paprika looks hard to beat in the 2 y.o. race and Tempest Tost and Rock Kingdom in the 3 y.o. race. Good luck and good punting on millions day.
