Magic
Millions Racing - 2011
Thoroughbred
Sales And Race Days - January 2011:
Well, it's that time of the year again and the Magic Millions sales and
race days are on again on the wonderful Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia.
Now in 2011, the excitement and fun of this iconic Australian event, will
certainly be no less than in the previous years.
The Magic Millions was founded in the mid eighties as an auction house for the sale of thoroughbred horses and at that time, the concept was being universally
introduced around the world. The purpose was to have only horses sold through the auction house, being eligible for the rich race series. This is funded by the
purchasers of the lots, who pay a registration fee upon purchase, to ensure eligibility. Of course there have been many variations from this, with other auction
houses and breeders bonuses such as, BOBS, Super Vobis, QTIS, etc. etc.
It was only in operation a few years when they hit severe financial trouble. In stepped savvy businessmen and adman John Singleton, as well as retail giant
Gerry Harvey. They resurrected the Magic Millions and built it up to what it is today, with the strength of the races increasing to provide reliable form for the
major Group 1 races.
When I think of the Magic Millions, there is only one race horse who comes to mind and that is the mighty General, who of course is General Nediym.
He won the Magic Millions 2yo Classic in 1997. He held his form after several Group 1 victories and returned in 1999 to claim the Magic Millions Cup for
older horses, but his run doesn't finish there. He has since sired two 2yo classic winners in Regimental Gal, who's form was good enough to go on and win
a Group 1, and Military Rose last year.
This years race day will be tinged with a touch of sadness as SE Qld is in the grips of one of its worst natural disasters in it's history. The breeders have
already got behind the appeal and lets hope the racing community does the same on the big day this Saturday and who knows? We may just see another
'General' ink their name into the record books.
